Meet Hillary Pilotto, LCPC
Certified EMDR therapist in Chicago
It’s time to stop feeling like life is passing you by.
The mental load you carry is overwhelming and you can’t get out from under it. Most people see a well put together woman who handles stress with ease. But that part of you is feeling smaller and smaller these days. Those around you don’t know the mask you put on when you step out of your bedroom to take on the day.
You wish you could actually participate in the life you created instead of going through the motions.
Whether you’ve never been to therapy before or you’re an experienced client, I ask that you come with an open mind and a motivation to get sh*t done. At some point in their treatment, most of my clients have noted that therapy with me is different. Here are my thoughts on why…
I believe the fit between therapist and client is everything
It is more important than credentials and where I went to school. Your progress hinges on if we are a good match, so it is my number one priority to make sure I’m the right person for you. My consult calls are at least 20 minutes, and are laid out in a strategic way so I get a clear idea of what is bringing you to therapy. Then you can get a sense of what I’m seeing and how our work together can help prior to us even scheduling an intake appointment. Book free consult here.
I’m not going to nod along to everything you say
You might’ve had therapy like this before or seen therapists in TV and movies become a bobblehead during the session. I’m an active participant in the sessions just like you. From day one, I will ask more questions and start pointing out patterns I’m noticing. Immediately, I’m pulling together interactions or scenarios you’ve talked about before and showing you what I see from the outside.
We aren’t here to catch up and chat
I make a point to meet weekly with new clients because I want to avoid the “catch up and chat” session. Most likely, you have these types of supportive people in your life already and you don’t have to pay them. Meeting weekly allows me to get to know you and for us to connect and build rapport quickly so we can dive into the work. I work best with clients that are motivated and have an urgency to feel better. Clients that benefit the most from our time together tend to be contemplative and spend some time out of sessions thinking about the session that just passed or what to spend time on in the next session.
I don’t give advice
Therapy isn’t me telling you what I would do in your situation. Many statements from clients start with “I know you’re not going to tell me what to do but,...” While they are right, these scenarios are so great for digging deeper and exploring threads and narratives about decision making and beyond.
You’ve read books, listened to podcasts, and followed Instagram pages to collect information about how to make things better. But how much has it helped? We’ll get deeper than simple coping skills or tips and tricks. You know how to cope. You’ve been managing yourself for decades. There will be exercises and strategies that we will go over to help you while we kick up some stuff. But the work we do together will be healing and long lasting.
Other possibly surprising, but helpful things to know about my style…
Your true, imperfect, messy self is welcome in your session. You don’t have to apologize for your hair being in a top knot or showing up without make-up. We could all benefit from taking ourselves a little less seriously.
We’ll laugh in sessions. Don’t get me wrong, we’ll be getting into some heavy stuff, but there will be some levity and lightness along the way. I tend to find my clients are actually pretty funny and I love when I get to see that side of them.
Adult language is welcome here. I swear and you’re welcome to if it serves you. Sometimes nothing feels more appropriate than an expertly delivered cuss word.
Clients describe me as a relatable therapist who can simultaneously make them laugh and feel their “stupid” feelings. A therapist who listens before she speaks and views the client-therapist relationship as an equal partnership.
I’m a married, working mom of 2 kids and a dog. Not only do I understand the crushing weight of never ending demands that can accompany this season of life, but I also experience the intermittent joy and awe as we look at our life and family. I understand the urgency to figure this out and change things NOW. This is a high-stakes time that no one can truly understand unless they’ve been in it.
My practice is a unique place where the needs of my clients and my values as a therapist vibe together to a 90’s hip-hop song.
I keep a smaller case load so I can give my clients the individualized attention they need
I love to collaborate with other providers you’re working with. The information I share and receive is invaluable for your treatment.
Learning and growth is at the heart of me. While I’m pretty loyal to the methods I use in the therapy room, I am consistently taking trainings in those methods to become a more skilled, intuitive therapist.
I don’t know it all, so I work with consultants and mentors on a monthly basis who help me be a better therapist and person.
