Meet Hillary Pilotto, LCPC

Certified EMDR therapist in Chicago

It’s time to stop feeling like life is passing you by.

The responsibility you carry feels overwhelming, whether it’s mental, emotional, or financial. You might appear to have it all together to others, but inside, it’s getting harder to manage. The mask you wear when you face the world hides the exhaustion and pressure you’re under.

You wish you could actually participate in the life you created instead of going through the motions.

Whether you’ve never been to therapy before or you’re an experienced client, I ask that you come with an open mind and a motivation to get stuff done. At some point in their treatment, most of my clients have noted that therapy with me is different. Here are my thoughts on why…

I believe the fit between therapist and client is everything

It is more important than credentials and where I went to school. Your progress hinges on if we are a good match, so it is my number one priority to make sure I’m the right person for you. My consult calls are at least 20 minutes, and are laid out in a strategic way so I get a clear idea of what is bringing you to therapy. Then you can get a sense of what I’m seeing and how our work together can help prior to us even scheduling an intake appointment. Book free consult here.

I’m not going to just listen and nod along

You might be used to therapy where the therapist just listens quietly, but that's not how I work. From the start, I’m fully engaged in the conversation. I’ll ask thoughtful questions, highlight patterns I’m noticing, and connect the dots between different situations you've shared. My goal is to provide an outside perspective that helps you see things in a new light and move forward with clarity.

We aren’t here to catch up and chat

I make a point to meet weekly with new clients because I want to avoid the “catch up and chat” session. Most likely, you have these types of supportive people in your life already and you don’t have to pay them. Meeting weekly allows me to get to know you and for us to connect and build rapport quickly so we can dive into the work. I work best with clients that are motivated and have an urgency to feel better. Clients that benefit the most from our time together tend to be contemplative and spend some time out of sessions thinking about the session that just passed or what to spend time on in the next session.

I don’t give advice

Therapy isn’t me telling you what I would do in your situation. Many statements from clients start with “I know you’re not going to tell me what to do but,...” While they are right, these scenarios are so great for digging deeper and exploring threads and narratives about decision making and beyond.

You’ve read books, listened to podcasts, and followed Instagram pages to collect information about how to make things better. But how much has it helped? We’ll get deeper than simple coping skills or tips and tricks. You know how to cope. You’ve been managing yourself for decades. There will be exercises and strategies that we will go over to help you while we kick up some stuff. But the work we do together will be healing and long lasting.

Other possibly surprising, but helpful things to know about my style

  • This space is for growth, not perfection. I value authenticity, so whether you're showing up after a rough day or feeling at your best, you're exactly where you need to be.

  • There will be laughter along the way. We’ll dig into some tough topics, but I believe there’s always room for a bit of humor. I often find that my clients have a great sense of humor, and I love when that side of you comes out..

  • Adult language is welcome here. I swear and you’re welcome to if it serves you. Sometimes nothing feels more appropriate than an expertly delivered cuss word.

Clients often say I’m relatable because I create an environment where they feel both heard and understood. We’ll work together as equals, and I’ll listen first—really listening before I offer feedback.

I’m a working mom of two kids and a dog, so I get the juggling act. I understand how overwhelming it can feel, but I also experience the small moments of awe that come with family life. I know the urgency to make meaningful changes, especially when you feel like time is slipping away. This season of life can be high-stakes, and I’m here to help you navigate it.

My practice is where your needs and my values as a therapist click, creating a space that feels real and down-to-earth

  • I keep a smaller case load so I can give my clients the individualized attention they need

  • I love to collaborate with other providers you’re working with. The information I share and receive is invaluable for your treatment.

  • Learning and growth is at the heart of me. While I’m pretty loyal to the methods I use in the therapy room, I am consistently taking trainings in those methods to become a more skilled, intuitive therapist.

  • I don’t know it all, so I work with consultants and mentors on a monthly basis who help me be a better therapist and person.
